Sediment Sampling and analysis

Are you developing hydropower/water resources projects in steep sediment-loaded Himalayan Rivers? If yes, feel free to contact us. We can assist you in preventing from investment failure by carrying out physical hydraulic model studies.

Hydro Lab is the only research organisation in Nepal having experience and expertise of international standard to conduct physical hydraulic model studies.

Hydro Lab welcomes developers, engineers, researchers, bankers and investors. Our past and on going works are ready for demonstration.

Hydro Lab has expertise in sediment studies, hydro turbine efficiency measurement and hydrometry.

Project - Upper Tama Koshi Hydropower Headworks Model Study

Project Introduction:

Project Location: Lama Bagar, Eastern Nepal
Nature of Headworks Site: Boulder and gravel bed river
Project type: Daily peaking run-of- river 310 MW hydropower
Model Study Year: 2004 - 2005
Client: Nepal Electricity Authority
Consultant: Norconsult AS Norway
Model Scale: 1:60
Model type: Mobile bed and undistorted

Objective:

This study had two objectives. They were:

  • To test the sustainability of daily peaking reservoir by sediment flushing from weir gates.
  • To test the performance of headworks components such as intake, bed load sluice, trash sluice and settling basins in respect of hydraulics and sediment.

Achievement:

The achievements from the model test are:

  • The model test ensured that the storage in the upstream of the diversion weir is sustainable subject to proper headworks operation.
  • The model test verified the satisfactory performance of designed headworks with minor modification.
