Sediment Sampling and analysis

Are you developing hydropower/water resources projects in steep sediment-loaded Himalayan Rivers? If yes, feel free to contact us. We can assist you in preventing from investment failure by carrying out physical hydraulic model studies.

Hydro Lab is the only research organisation in Nepal having experience and expertise of international standard to conduct physical hydraulic model studies.

Hydro Lab welcomes developers, engineers, researchers, bankers and investors. Our past and on going works are ready for demonstration.

Hydro Lab has expertise in sediment studies, hydro turbine efficiency measurement and hydrometry.

Project - Devighat Intake Model Study

Project Introduction:

Project Location: Trishuli, Western Nepal
Project Type: Run-of- river 14 MW Devighat hydropower
Model Study Year: 2005
Client: Nepal Electricity Authority
Model Scale: 1:14

Background:

Trishuli Project (21 MW) was commissioned in 1970 and was upgraded to 24 MW in 1996 for design discharge of 45.6 m³/s. By using Trishuli outlet as an intake, the Devighat (14.1 MW) project was built in 1984. To keep safe and efficient operation of turbine in Trishuli power house the maximum tailrace water level has been limited to 148.75 m. Sticking into this level, Devighat water conveyance system can draw about 38 m³/s from Trishuli outlet, which shows that the Devighat power plant is loosing about 7 m³/s of available discharge.

Objective:

The prime objective is to carry out a physical model test of Trishuli outlet for finding alternatives to abstract design discharge into Devighat conveyance system.

Study Result:

Field measurement revealed that the back water from the Devighat forebay is the hindering factor in achieving the objective. It was iidentified that the problem is loacted out of modelled area.
