Sediment and Efficiency

  1. Sediment and Efficiency Testing: The sediment measurement data analyzed in the sediment laboratory is essential in water resources projects to protect hydraulic structures from abrasion, ensure efficient operation, and develop effective sediment management strategies like flushing and desanding. It helps to monitor and control reservoir sedimentation and preserve storage capacity. Moreover, the laboratory analyses provide critical data on sediment characteristics, which leads to proper designs and making operational decisions minimizing environmental impacts and maintenance costs.

Hydro Lab has successfully carried out the field sampling of suspended sediment followed by laboratory analyses of more than 130 different hydropower projects within Nepal.

Additionally, Hydro Lab has also conducted laboratory analyses of suspended sediment samplers collected by several other companies for about 300 projects within and outside Nepal. The sediment sampling in the field includes point sampling by handheld sampler and depth integrated sampling with depth integrated samplers. Laboratory analyses of suspended sediment include; concentration, particle size distribution, mineral content and organic matters content tests.

  2. Turbine efficiency measurement: Turbine efficiency measurement is generally done for two purposes. For new turbines, it is done to ensure that the equipment supplier has met the guaranteed efficiency and for old turbines, it is done to know the present status and figure out the improvement potential in terms of generation. Hydro Lab has the expertise, equipment and experience to conduct a prototype turbine efficiency measurement by a thermodynamic method. Since 2003 to date, Hydro Lab has conducted efficiency tests of 43 Turbine Runners of different hydropower plants within and outside the country. Following is the list of power plants where efficiency measurements were conducted by Hydro Lab.
